Even if her husband didn't get her, the ten-year old did. He brought home reams of school papers marked with stars and double stars and Wow's with exclamation points and Edie would complain to her husband, 'I can't be expected to keep all this stuff.' 'So toss it,' he'd say. So she did, then invariably there'd be some permission slip that needed signing buried between math tests and art projects and the boy'd watch as she went through the kitchen trash to retrieve it from dried pasta and spent chili. He wouldn't say a word and she'd feel guilty as hell. 'Mama just can't be saving all this,' she'd tell him. He'd stay quiet and she'd get angry. 'You'd like to fill up the house with this stuff,' she'd say. The kid would wrap his arms around her hips. 'I'm sorry,' he'd say. She'd find the permission slip and hand it to him. 'Your father can sign this.' She'd watch him trot away. If there had been a 'C' among them, or even a 'B,' that she'd have kept. That she'd have framed and nailed to the wall.
